What is Permaculture?

"Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system."

Tropical Environment

Permaculture in a tropical environment differs from what some may be used to. Regardless, it encompasses the concept of utilizing land, resources, people, and the environment in a manner that produces as little waste as possible. Adaptations in a tropical environment may focus more on catchment tanks for rainwater, solar energy, and growing + harvesting nutrient or medicinal fruit. Cultivated land for human benefit is done with respect to fertile soil and land maintenance

Closed Loop Systems

Closed Loop Systems idealize the notion of "No Waste!" by making sure that each step in a cycle curates/facilitates the following step.

How can Permaculture aid in creating a Sustainable Future?

A Farm of Therapy feels strongly about Sustainability and ensuring a healthy planet for future generations. Throughout the 24-acre property, our team can be found regularly clearing invasive species, harvesting herbs + cacao, and meeting regularly to discuss projects that support our mission.

As our world continues to evolve, so does our approach as permaculturists. Staying true to the three ethics (see above) is integral as we keep up to date on design and regenerative systems/strategies. Maintaining a balance between maximizing the use of renewable resources and reducing dependence on nonrenewable resources is crucial.

Permaculture is the future. Why? When you are able to actively enforce closed loop systems, you are able to feed countless mouths while simultaneously being good to the Āina.

Clean water, Clean air, Clean food. Food sovereignty. Meaningful connections within the community enabling us to contribute in a consistently positive way.

Here at Cocoa Bananas, we recognize that collaborating with nature makes us smarter, and in order to contribute to long term sustainability, we must consciously consider nurturing regenerative systems. Not only does this enable us to expand further, but we can educate others as we go. Stay tuned and follow us on social media for a first-hand look at farm projects whether they pertain to building, animals, agriculture, classes, or events!
